After leading for nearly all of the game, the Huntington Beach Oiler team held off a late rally to win the CIF Southern Regional Baseball Division I championship on Saturday by 5-3 over Cathedral Catholic of San Diego at HBHS.
The orange-and-black scored three time in the bottom of the first inning, then three times more in the bottom of the sixth for a 5-0 lead. But the Dons made it close with three runs in the top of the seventh, two of them unearned.
The Oilers finished their run to the title with a 25-8-1 record. They also won the Sunset League championship and were a semifinalist in the CIF-SS Division 1 playoffs.
Jared Grindlinger batted 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs. Parker Leoff was 1-for-2 with two runs scored.
