Trash pickup costs rising

The cost of having trash picked up is going to rise a bit in Stanton.

At Tuesday night’s meeting for the city council, a public hearing was held, followed by the approval of a 3.5 percent increase for single family residential customers and a 8.3 percent rise for commercial customers. The vote was 5-0.

Both price increases were blamed on the “increased cost of complying with certain new organic waste mandates.”

Also on Tuesday night, the council approved the second reading and adoption of amendments to the municipal code to improve the enforcement and monitoring of vacant and foreclosed properties in the city.

In recent months, homeless persons have been occupying some of those unused structures and that has resulted in fires and the sale of drugs.

The next meeting of the Stanton City Council is set for Tuesday, Aug. 25 at 6:30 p.m.
