Five area high school football teams are unbeaten as we head into Week Three competition.

Huntington Beach (3-0) will travel on Thursday to play the Redondo Union (3-0) Sea Hawks

Orange (3-0) will host Locke (0-1) of Los Angeles on Thursday night.

Pacifica (3-0) will host Claremont (1-2) on Friday.

Rancho Alamitos (2-0) will play Garden Grove (0-3) on Friday

La Quinta (2-0) will host Magnolia (1-1) on Thursday.

The Garden Grove-Rancho game has been played almost annually since the first contest in 1958. Over the years, the teams have traded victories and losses, but this year the Argos are in an uncharacteristic slump.

Over three games so far this season, Grove has been outscored 92-19. Since the start of the 2024 season, the Argonauts have won four games and lost 19.

That downturn followed a stretch in which the red-and-white won two CIF-SS championships and nine league titles in 10 seasons.

Follow the flag

Tackle football isn’t the only variety of gridiron play underway this fall for local high schools.

Every West Orange County school is fielding a girls’ flag football team.

This year Huntington Beach High has a girls’ flag team to match the boys success.

The Oilers are 7-2 so far and is in the MaxPreps Flag Football Showdown tournament and will face the San Marcos Knights (6-0) on Friday afternoon.

The orange and black are coming off a heart-stopping triple overtime win over district rival Edison, 16-15 on Sept. 2.

HBHS is led by senior Roxie Shaia, who passed for 230 yards and two scores in that game. She’s a running threat, too, gaining eight yards a carry on average.
