Could sea turtle eggs win a turf struggle against jet fighter airplanes?

A possible collision between a reptile and aviators was avoided when the eggs – nested in the sand by olive ridley sea turtles in the Seal Beach National Wildlife Refuge and Huntington Beach – were collected and transferred to the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach.

The eggs were moved both because of the possible impact of Hurricane Polo which could create hazardous surf conditions along beaches in Orange County and San Diego county, and the planned Pacific Air Show, scheduled to be held over Huntington Beach from Oct. 2-4. There were concern that vibrations from the low-flying jets might cause damage to the eggs.

According to the Aquarium of the Pacific, the eggs will be cared for and – it’s hoped – will hatch in 45-60 days around the first week in November.
