Barons, Mariners fall to tough foes

Pacifica and Fountain Valley football teams are paying the price for scheduling tough pre-season opponents. Both lost Thursday night and saw their records drop to 0-2.

WILSON/LONG BEACH 40, FOUNTAIN VALLEY 7

Angel Hernandez ran for a 1-yard score for the sole touchdown tallied by the Barons in their game against the Bruins at Huntington Beach High. He ended up with 44 yards rushing, 28 yards passing and 21 yards receiving. The Barons are back in action next on Sept. 9 visiting Trabuco Hills.

NEWPORT HARBOR 47, PACIFICA 26

In a shootout Thursday night at Orange Coast College’s LeBard Stadium, the Mariners stayed even with the host Sailors into the third quarter before Newport pulled away to get the win. Ben Jefferson ran for one score for Pacifica and threw for another. He ended up with 216 yards passing and 91 on the ground. Hagen Foreman intercepted a Sailor pass and returned it 23 yards for a touchdown and Ryan May scored on a 1-yard run for the M’s. Next up for Pacifica is a trip to Dana Hills on Sept. 9.
