Edison’s football team isn’t the only Charger team making the news. The EHS boys’ basketball team improved its record to 2-0 with a 79-64 win over University High Wednesday evening.

The green-and-white were led by Randal Walker with 30 points and Nate Matthews with 27 more. SportsbriefsOther top scorers among local teams were Jose Guardado and Sam Marquez of Orange High, with 19 and points respectively.

Among girls’ teams in the Garden Grove-Huntington Beach-Westminster area, Kylie Beall of Pacifica stood out with 15 points. The Mariners are off to a 5-0 start so far this season.

DUCKS WIN IN SHOOTOUT

The Anaheim Ducks defeated the Carolina Hurricanes 6-5 in a shootout Wednesday night at Honda Center. The win improved the home team’s mark to 13-9-5, good for a tie for second place in the NHL Pacific Division.

anaheim-ducks-logo1After playing to a 5-5 tie through three periods, the teams played a scoreless overtime, and the Ducks won it in the shootout, hitting two of four tries. Corey Perry tied the game in the third and Ondrej Kase settled it in the shootout.

Anaheim is back in action Friday hosting the San Jose Sharks (15-10-1), with whom the Ducks are tied with 31 points.
