Although the final score was 3-2, the margin of victory in Friday’s CIF-SS second round Division 1 clash between Pacifica and Orange Lutheran was much smaller than that.
You could measure it in fractions of an inch, a brief moment of indecision, and some good and bad fortune on both sides. But when the wheel of fortune stopped spinning at Knott Street and Lampson Avenue, the Lancers had edged the Mariners and advanced to the quarterfinal round on Thursday.
The battle between the state’s number four (Orange Lutheran) and 10th (Pacifica) prep softball teams began with a bang. The leadoff hitter for the visiting Lancers slashed a triple that began a three-run rally, a total the Mariners could never quite overcome.
The M’s almost did it, pushing across two runs in the bottom of the fourth. With one out, a single and two Lancer infield miscues loaded the bases, and Lanaia Leuta smacked a ball to left field that brought in two runners.
After that, it was taut duel between OL’s Miranda Stoddard and PHS’ Julia Cabral in the pitching circle. Both teams threatened a few times, including a bases-loaded situation in the bottom of the sixth in which a Mariner batter went down swinging for the third out.
Despite the disappointing outcome, Pacifica had a season that saw the team rise above the unexpected death of Coach Mark Campbell. The Mariners won the Empire League title and posted a 17-5-1 record against strong competition.
As for the Lancers (23-6-1), they will continue their 2019 season with a quarterfinal game Thursday against the winner of the Norco-Vista Murrieta game. The semifinals will be on Tuesday, May 14 and the championship game is scheduled for Saturday, May 18.
