International two-way baseball star Shohei Ohtani was finally back in the Angels’ lineup on Tuesday in Detroit, but the real fuss was over someone else.
While Ohtani managed just a walk in his 2019 debut as designated hitter, new Angel starter Griffin Canning struck out seven batters and pitched 5.1 innings as the Halos defeated the Tigers to snap a two-game losing skid in Mexico.
The Angels outhit the home team nine to five, and built up a 4-0 lead before the Tigers could get on the board.
David Fletcher had two hits and an RBI, while Andrelton Simmons had two hits and two RBIs. Mike Trout doubled and drove in a run, in addition to drawing two walks.
Tuesday’s victory put the Halos at 16-19, still in fourth place in the American League West. They’re 4.5 games behind the first place Houston Astros.
The Angels will play the Tigers again on Wednesday with Tyler Skaggs (3-2) making the start for the Orange County team.
