To our readers: Last week we ran an article updating the status of various development projects in Garden Grove. We didn’t include all the information we got from Lisa Kim, community and economic development director, because we didn’t want the article to turn into a novel.
However, there’s been so much interest expressed in growth in The Big Strawberry that we here include some additional information in the field in a revived “Usually Reliable Sources” column.
Brookhurst Triangle: The first phase of the project in the area formed by the confluences of Brookhurst Street, Garden Grove Boulevard and Brookhurst Place, the four-story Brookhurst Place apartment complex has been finished. Phase Two involved relocating the Kia dealership from its Garden Grove Boulevard location to a newer, larger facility on Harbor Boulevard south of the Garden Grove (22) Freeway.
Now that that is done, the developer has 45 days to demolish the remaining buildings from the car dealership. When that’s completed, the real estate will be conveyed to the developer and the next phase will begin.
Phase II calls for 59 condominiums and over 400 apartments. The final phases will include commercial spaces and – potentially – a “boutique” hotel.
Main Street: The latest addition will be Smallwood Plaza, built on what is now a small parking lot on the west side of the street. It’s now in plan check and will end up as a two-story mixed-use building with 3,000-square feet of retail on the ground floor and nine apartment units above.
Site C: This upscale hotel, retail and restaurant project on the east side of Harbor Boulevard (directly south of the Target department store at Chapman) is “moving along,” according to Kim. “We expect the first wave of plans to be submitted by the end of the year.”
OC Streetcar: The street car line now under construction along the old Pacific Electric right-of-way from Santa Ana to Garden Grove will have as its western terminus a station on Harbor Boulevard, just north of Westminster Avenue. There’s been a lot of discussion in the news media about “transit-oriented development” that grows up along rail lines. Any buzz about that for Garden Grove? “Not recently,” she said. “But in the future, possibly.”
