A 30-year-old Uber driver from Garden Grove was arrested on kidnap, rape and robbery charges today in Santa Ana.

According to the SAPD, Jason Humberto Rodas is being held in lieu of $1 million bail. He is accused of several sexual assault counts including kidnapping with intent to commit rape.

The victim, a 51-year-old woman called for an Uber driver at about 4 a.m. to take her to work in Santa Ana, police say. While en route to the woman’s workplace the suspect cancelled the charge and told her the ride would be free. Rodas allegedly asked her several sexual questions, frightening the woman, who demanded to be taken to her work.

Rodas then allegedly threatened to throw the victim out of the vehicle if she called police. At this point he “drove erratically” until the journey ended in the area of 300 South Minnie Street in Santa Ana. The victim ran from the car but was quickly caught and held in a chokehold. He strangled her before sexually assaulting her, say police.

Evidence at the scene identified Rodas as the suspect and he was arrested several hours later. He was booked into Orange County Jail in Santa Ana.

SAPD detectives believe Rodas may have committed other crimes. Anyone with such information is asked to call Detective Julio Gallardo at (714) 245-8378.
