Alert neighbors who pitched in to fight a home fire in Garden Grove Tuesday morning are being credited with keeping the blaze from spreading.

According to the Orange County Fire Authority, the fire was reported in the 8600 block of Trask Avenue (east of Newland Street) at 10:44 a.m. Firefighters found and carried an unconscious man down from his upstairs bedroom, which had filled with smoke from a fire on the first floor.

He was treated by paramedics and taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange in critical condition.

Before the arrival of firefighters, neighbors who smelled smoke and heard the alarms used a fire extinguisher and garden hose to help contain the blaze.
