Garden Grove High made history recently when its boys’ basketball team won the CIF-SS Division 4AA title, the first-ever in that sport for the school.
But the Argonauts aren’t the only locals making history on the hardwood.
Edison High of Huntington Beach – champions of the Surf League – defeated Birmingham High of Lake Balboa from the San Diego Section 59-50 on Thursday night in the second round of the CIF Southern California Division II Regionals.
The Chargers (28-5) now advance to the semifinals on Saturday against Los Altos (25-6) of Hacienda Heights.
La Quinta High of Westminster – third-place finisher in the Garden Grove League – came from behind on Thursday to defeat Villanova Prep of Ojai in the Division V Regionals.
The Aztecs (21-11) will take on Fontana (27-5) in a semifinal match on Saturday.
In girls’ basketball action, Orangewood Academy of Garden Grove – champions of the San Joaquin League – defeated Granada Hills Charter 42-30 on Thursday in a Division I Regionals contest.
The Spartans (23-9) were led by Jayionne Brown, who scored 29 points. Orangewood now advances to the semifinal round against Bishop Montgomery (19-6) of Torrance on Saturday.
Regional finals are set for Tuesday, March 8.
