Garland names special counsel

A special counsel has been appointed by Attorney General Merrick Garland to investigate the presence of classified documents at former president Donald Trump’s Mar-A-Lago estate as well as his possible role in the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol.

According to the Associated Press, Jack Smith, a veteran prosecutor, will oversee the investigations. 

Trump, who recently announced another run for the White House in the 2024 election, attacked what he called “the egregiously corrupt Biden administration and their weaponized Department of Justice.”

Sports: USC vs. UCLA rivalry continues

Possession of the Victory Bell will be at stake when USC and UCLA meet at the Rose Bowl on Saturday afternoon for the 92nd meeting of the rivals.

UCLA won last year 62-33, but USC leads the series 51-33-7. 

The Trojans (9-1) are favored over the Bruins (8-2).

Weather: The return of the winds

Another stretch of breezy days ahead of us, according to the National Weather Service. The forecast for the West Orange County area for Saturday is for a daytime high of 74, and an  overnight low of 47 with winds up to 25 miles an hour. The wind will continue on Sunday with a daytime high of 75 (49). Monday will bring a mix of sun and clouds with a high of 74 (51).
