On a 4-0 vote with Mayor David Shawver absent, the Stanton City Council on Tuesday night decided to move forward with having city staff draw up a proposed ordinance limiting the mayor as well as council members to three terms.

Such an ordinance would be submitted to the public in the November 2024 general election.

There are already term limits for council members, but not for mayor.  Shawver, first elected to the city council in 1988 and has served several terms as mayor and was elected to that post most recently in 2022 with no opposition.

Other topics on the agenda including issues of homelessness and prostitution will be discussed at a later date due to the mayor’s absence.
