Trump off the Colorado ballot

The Colorado Supreme Court ruled Tuesday that former president Donald Trump is ineligible to serve as president on the grounds that his actions related to the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the U.S Capitol constituted “insurrection.”

Under the court’s ruling, the Colorado secretary of state is ordered to remove Trump’s name from the Republican primary ballot. The ruling overturned a decision by a lower court saying that the constitutional provision about insurrection did not refer to presidents.

If similar rulings are issued in other states, it could have a major impact on the 2024 presidential race. The issue could ultimately be decided by the U.S. Supreme Court.

A protest inside the U.S. Capitol Rotunda on Tuesday advocating for a cease-fire in the Israel-Hamas war led to the arrest of at least 60 people.

A sign was unfurled reading “Stop Funding Violence,” and protesters chanted “Not enough nickel! Not another dime! No more money for Israel’s crimes!”

The protesters entered the building as a tour group and were arrested as they began their demonstration, which is illegal under District of Columbia law.

Also on Tuesday, the United Nations Security Council met in its seventh try at passing a resolution urging a cease-fire in Gaza. Previous attempts have been stopped by the United States as a permanent member of the council.
