Support for Texas on the agenda

The Huntington Beach City Council has taken controversial stands on a variety of topics over the past year and on its agenda for Tuesday’s meeting is what might be the most contentious topic of all: defiance of the federal government.

Mayor Pro Tem Pat Burns is asking the council to back a “Statement of Solidarity with Texas,” regarding the Lone Star State’s standoff with the Biden Administration over the issue of whether Texas had the right to stop Border Patrol agents from removing some of the obstacles placed at the Mexican border by state officials.

The statement supports Tex. Gov. Greg Abbott’s claim that the federal government has “broken the compact between the United States and the States” and alleges that President Joe Biden and his administration “have attempted to suppress Texas protecting itself from an invasion into Texas,” presumably referring to migrants crossing illegally into the U.S. from Mexico.

Recalling the city’s legal struggles with Sacramento, the statement says, “The City of Huntington Beach is familiar with the effects of a higher government interfering with self-governance” and goes on to compare the Biden and Gov. Gavin Newsom administrations to a “schoolyard bully slapping down a … little child.”

The council will meet in its chambers in the Civic Center, 2000 Main St. (at Yorktown Avenue) at 6 p.m., following a closed session at 5 p.m.
