Trump’s name on ballot; UN team finds sexual crimes in Gaza

Former president Donald Trump’s name will appear on the ballot in Colorado, the U.S Supreme Court ruled on Monday.

The unanimous ruling by the high court blocked efforts to deny Trump a spot on the ballot on the grounds that he had violated the 14th Amendment’s bar on holding office by people who had been involved in “insurrection” against the federal government.

The Colorado Supreme Court had earlier ruled that Trump’s actions and speeches had led to the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol.

Trump, of course, has not been convicted of insurrection, although he is facing charges related to that issue in two venues.

Monday’s ruling made no mention of Trump’s claim that he was immune to prosecution for anything he did while in the White House.

Sexual violence found in Gaza

UNITED NATIONS building.

“Clear and convincing information” that Israel hostages seized in Gaza by Hamas militants have been victims of sexual violence has been determined by United Nations investigators. Some hostages have been raped and otherwise sexually abused, the report indicated.

Some of the rape victims were then killed. The testimony of witnesses and other evidence bore out earlier reports of sexual abuse of hostages. The report indicates that such behavior may still be going on against hostages still held.

At the same time, Palestinian officials told the UN team of “cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment of Palestinians” held in detention. Israel denied the accusations.
