It’s a rematch.
On Tuesday, both President Joe Biden and former president Donald Trump scored well in primaries in Georgia, Mississippi. and Washington state to clinch the nominations of their parties for president.
It’s the first presidential rematch since 1956, when Dwight Eisenhower and Adlai Stevenson faced off for the second time (Eisenhower won twice).
Biden said that Trump “is running a campaign of resentment, revenge and retribution that threatens the very idea of America.” Trump called Biden “the worst president in the history of our country.”
The election is considered likely to be close. Trump has led in recent polling by modest margins, but Biden’s State of the Union address has improved his numbers, even taking the lead in some surveys.
Although the nominations seem certain, there are some questions that remain. Who will Trump choose as his running mate? Will age issues become a problem for Biden (81) or Trump (77)? How will international events –- such as Ukraine or Gaza – affect voters’ choices?
Top Russian admiral is fired by Putin
Ukraine, a nation without access to an ocean, is nevertheless enjoying considerable success in damaging Russia’s navy. The latest evidence of this are reports from Moscow that Admiral Nikolai Yevmenov, the commender of the Russian Navy has been removed from his office.
The use of drones and missiles – some of these supplied by the United States and other Western allies – have been effective in getting control of the crucial Black Sea, which now means that Ukraine can ship grain to the outside world, an important source of income.
According to Ukrainian sources, such high-tech weaponry has destroyed between 15 and 25 Russian ships. The result is that Russia has pulled its fleet away from the Ukrainian coast.
U.S. to send $300 million in aid to Ukraine
Drawing on American military stockpiles, the U.S will send another $300 million in aid to Ukraine.
National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said Tuesday that “unanticipated cost savings” had led to “a modest amount” of money to use pay to send Ukraine weapons, ammunition and more to that country to resist Russian invaders.
He did note that this package of aid was a short-term effort to keep Ukraine from running out of ammunition. It will come from existing stockpiles but won’t impact U.S “military readiness,” said Sullivan.
Uvalde police chief will resign
The chief of police of Uvalde, Texas, where 21 people were killed in a school massacre, submitted his resignation on Tuesday. He had been on vacation on May 24, 2022 when a teenage boy opened fire in a elementary school classroom.
Daniel Rodriguez’ resignation came shortly after a report commissioned by the city generally exonerated Uvalde police for their response to the incident, which has been widely criticized by local residents and a federal investigation.
Although almost 400 law enforcement officers were present at the incident, including Uvalde police, it took 77 minutes before they confronted the shooter. It was a Border Patrol team that eventually took him down.
