Two agenda items affecting the city’s library system are on the agenda for next Tuesday’s meeting of the Huntington Beach City Council.
First will be a request for the council to authorize the issuance of a request for proposals for managed library services for the city’s libraries and to return to the council with an agreement for consideration.
Critics of managed library systems have termed it “privatization.” Supporters say it will modernize operations.
Additionally, the request is to meet with “affected labor associations to discuss this potential opportunity.” In some cities with managed library systems, employees have been offered jobs with the new management.
Second will be the introduction of an ordinance to create a “community-parent guardian review board for review of procurement of children’s library material.”
Supporters say it could keep “inappropriate material” with sexual content from being available to children; opponents are calling it “censorship.”
There will be a study/closed session at 3 p.m, with the regular meeting at 6 p.m. in the council chambers, 2000 Main St. (at Yorktown Avenue).
