Sports: South Carolina wins women’s title
The University of South Carolina’s women’s basketball team completed an unbeaten season by winning the NCAA Division I title, defeating Iowa 87-75 on Sunday in Cleveland.
The Lady Gamecocks finished the year 39-0; the Hawkeyes are 34-6.
Iowa’s Caitlin Clark – the highest scorer in NCAA women’s play – led all scorers with 30 points. But 18 of those were in the first quarter as the Hawkeyes jumped out to a quick 10-0 lead.
As Clark cooled off – she ended up shooting 10 of 28 overall and 5-of-13 from three-point territory – and USC’s Kamilla Cardoso grabbing a lot of those missed shots (she had 17 rebounds) the situation reversed.
The top scorers for the Lady Gamecocks was Tessa Johnson with 19 points, followed by Cardoso with 15 and 14 from Te-Hina Paopao.
Kate Martin scored 16 for Iowa.
