Even long-time Mayor Dave Shaver has now voted in favor of asking voters to impose a lifetime term limit on the position of mayor.

Shawver, who has served on the Stanton City Council since 1988 and had several terms as mayor, on Tuesday night voted with his four colleagues to place the two-term limit ordinance on the November general election ballot.

If voters approve the change, Shawver – last elected as mayor in 2022 – would conclude his tenure as the city’s top-elected official at the end of 2026.

Shawver had previously opposed the term limit and was the sole “no” vote in September when the council approved having a proposed ordinance drawn up and placed before voters in November, if the council voted in favor of the final wording.

Stanton now has four districts from which council members are elected. The mayor is elected citywide.

The next meeting of the council is June 11.
