Ducks new duds = more wins?

NEW DUCKS UNIFORMS (Anaheim Ducks).

The Anaheim Ducks haven’t made a good move since the 2017-18 season, the last time they made the Stanley Cup playoffs; indeed the last time they posted a winning (44-25-13) record.

Since then, they’ve had two sixth place finishes, two seventh place seasons and two at the very bottom of the NHL Pacific Division.

In the crowded Southern California sports scene, with Shohei Ohtani tearing up the National League for the Dodgers and the Lakers getting a very interesting new head coach, the hapless Ducks are rapidly becoming irrelevant to all but the most forgiving hockey fans.

But now they’ve yanked the spotlight back to them. This week they unveiled gorgeous new uniforms that make them look good, even if it’s unlikely it will make the players perform any better.

They’ve revived the original Disney-esq Mighty Ducks logo and combined it with gorgeous orange (for Orange County) and gold (for Orange County’s “golden beaches” and black … well, maybe that’s out of mourning for a near-decade of depressing results.

I like it. But that’s not to say that fashion will make a difference on the ice. Sure, the faithful will spend some money buying “new look” jerseys and associated merchandise. That will make cash registers ring, but lighting the red lamp will take more than that.

Of course it’s better to be admired –visually – than laughed at. How about those periwinkle uniforms the Angels had when Disney first bought the team? And who can forget back in 1976 when the Chicago White Sox donned a softball-style look complete with shorts and a T-shirt, just one sartorial step from a beer league?

That didn’t help much. They had the worst record in MLB. But it got people’s attention, which is part of the reason for the citrus-flavored look of the new Anaheim Ducks.
