Presidents have “immunity for official acts” says high court

Presidents have broad immunity from criminal prosecution for official acts, but none for unofficial acts, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled on Monday.

The ruling, supported by the conservative justices and opposed by the liberal justices, states: “Under our constitutional structure of separated powers, the nature of presidential power entitles a former president to absolute immunity from criminal prosecution for actions within his conclusive and preclusive constitutional authority.”

In the opinion written by Chief Justice John Roberts, it was added “There is no immunity for unofficial acts.”

Former president Donald Trump praised the decision, writing on Trump Social “BIG WIN FOR OUR CONSTITUTION AND DEMOCRACY. PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN!”

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-New York) calls it “a disgraceful decision” that undermines the principle that “no man is above the law.”

Analysts believe a major impact of the ruling is there is unlikely to be a trial of Trump on charges of trying to unlawfully interfere with the results of the 2020 election before the Nov. 5, 2024 election.

Biden not giving up despite furor

President Joe Biden is not yielding to pressure to give up on his presidential campaign despite many calls to do so after his shaky debate performance in last Thursday’s debate.

“Folks,” he said Friday at a fund-raiser, “I would not be running again if I did not believe with all of my heart and soul that I can do this job.”

The latest polling won’t reflect any impacts on the race so soon after the debate. The latest New York Times average of polls shows Donald Trump leading Biden 46 to 45 percent.

At ABC’s 538.com. Trump has opened up a small lead of 41.8 to 40.4 percent, including a race with Robert F. Kennedy, Jr, in the mix with 9.1 percent.

After a day off for both teams, the Los Angeles Angels and Los Angeles Dodgers resume play on Tuesday.

The Angels will be in Oakland to start a series with the A’s and the Blue Crew will be at home hosting the Arizona Diamondbacks.
