Another challenge to state authority is on the agenda for Tuesday’s meeting of the Huntington Beach City Council.
A proposed Ordinance 4326 would register the city’s opposition to State Assembly Bill 1955, which prohibits public schools from disclosing – without permission – a student’s “sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression” to any other person, including parents.
The proposed ordinance would declare Huntington Beach a “Parents Right to Know City,” and prohibit any public school educators in the city “with the teaching and care of children” from withholding such information from parents.
The city is served by three public school systems: Huntington Beach City School District, Ocean View School District (both K-8) and the Huntington Beach Union High School District. None of them are subject to the jurisdiction of the city government.
The proposed ordinance also would allow – upon a majority vote of the council – the city attorney to sue the state to challenge the constitutionality of AB 1955.
Also on the agenda are:
- a request by Councilmember Casey McKeon to establish regulations for tobacco retailers citywide;
- an item by Councilmembers Rhonda Bolton, Dan Kalmick and Natalie Moser demanding that Orange County Supervisor Andrew Do resign his post.
The council will meet in its chambers, 2000 Main St. with a closed session at 4:30 p.m. and a regular meeting at 6 p.m.
