The California State Legislature has passed its share of what Tim Walz might call “knucklehead” laws in the last few years, but one that really has me rolling my eyes is Assembly Bill 3704.
Going into effect on July 1, 2026, this gem of political overreach bans K-12 schools from using any “derogatory” term against Native Americans as a school team name. On the list are “Apaches, Big Red, Braves, Chiefs, Chieftains, Chippewa, Commanches, Indians, Squaw and Tribe.”
“Redskin” was previously banned.
As we’ve written here before, the most immediately affected local school would be Fullerton High’s Indians. But the reach of this law could extend much further.
How about the Anaheim High Colonists? Aren’t we offended by one culture colonizing another? How about the Marina Vikings? Isn’t that insulting to Scandinavians who wear horns on their heads? Ditto for the Loara Saxons?
And let’s imagine taking it a step further. How about nicknames that appear to exclude girls and women? There may have been female Vaqueros or Matadors, but even so, weren’t they mean to cattle, anyway?
And we move toward having a net-zero carbon footprint, doesn’t it seem like the Huntington Beach Oilers mascot is glorifying what’s believed to be a major contributor to climate change?
You can follow that trend down some strange rabbitholes. We may soon see something like the fictional “Human Beings” representing the fictional Greendale Community College in the “Community” TV show.
Featureless, stripped of any personality or individuality. And certainly devoid of any sense of humor.
