On the final night of the 2024 high school regular schedule, three teams from our West Orange County area – Los Amigos, Marina and Pacifica – won championships.
LAHS won the Sigma League crown outright and Pacifica grabbed the Omicron pennant. Marina shared the Lambda title with Kennedy and Beckman.
The Los Amigos Lobos completed a perfect 10-0 regular football season with come-from behind efforts to defeat the Calvary Chapel of Santa Ana 17-16 on Friday night and claim sole possession of the Sigma League title.
Adrian Ramirez carried the ball 21 times for 120 yards and a touchdown. Issac Galindo had 14 carries for 87 yards and one score for the Orange and Black.
LA trailed 6-0 and again 13-10, but rallied for the win.
In the Alpha League, Edison High lost 21-17 to San Clemente High, finishing the regular season at 6-4 and 1-2 in the four-team conference.
Gillian Glick scored Edison’s first touchdown on a 1-yard rush in the second quarter. Nick Bammer’s extra point tied the game at 7-7. Later in the quarter, Hammer hit a 27-yard field goal to give the green-and-gold a 10-7 lead going into halftime.
With five minutes to go in the game, the Tritons regained the lead at 14-10 with a 30-yard score and the extra point. On their next possession, they extended their lead to 21-10 with a 38-yard scoring run.
But the Chargers didn’t give up. Quarterback Sam Thomson hit Gavin Slaughter for a 20-yard TD and Bammer added the PAT to make it 21-17, but time soon ran out.
Marina (9-1, 4-1) needed overtime to claim its share of the title, beating Beckman 27-24 on a last-minute rushing touchdown.
In the Kappa League, the final game was tough for local teams. St. Margaret’s defeated Westminster 43-0 and Segerstrom bested Garden Grove 47-19, so the Lions and Argonauts finished fifth and sixth in the league.
On Thursday, Pacifica – which started the season 0-5 due to key injuries and other woes – won the first Omicron League title outright with a 28-0 win over Portola High of Irvine at Bolsa Stadium.
Addison Adams led the Marina attack for the M’s now 5-5 overall and head for the playoffs.
Western finished its season with a 5-5 record overall (2-3 in Delta League action) after edging Trabuco Hills 36-35 at Handel Stadium.
In the Epsilon League, Brady Edmunds passed for four touchdowns and 332 yards as Huntington Beach High defeated El Dorado 49-28. He also rushed for 50 yards and a score.
The Oilers are 6-4 overall and took third with a 3-2 mark, qualifying for a playoff spot.
Bolsa Grande (5-5, 3-2) tied for third place into Tango League by defeating Santiago by 42-21 (4-6, 2-3) at Monsoor Stadium.
