And now there are two.
After CIF-SS quarterfinal games on Thursday and Friday, just two high school football teams from our West Orange County area will still be playing in the semifinal round this coming week.
Edison High (8-4) won its game over Bonita 24-0 in Division 3 play on Friday, while Pacifica (7-5) outlasted The Brentwood School 27-23 on Friday.
Seeing their seasons end were Huntington Beach (7-5), which lost to 45-14 to Summit in D-5 play and La Quinta (8-4) falling 27-20 to Pioneer in D-14 action.
On Thursday, Los Amigos (11-1) fell 40-20 to El Rancho in a Division 11 quarterfinal.
In Edison’s win, Julius Gillick rushed for one score and Sam Thomson passed for two more to lead the Chargers, who will play Vista Murrieta in the semifinals.
Pacifica won its seventh consecutive game in part because of three interceptions. The M’s will take on St. Anthony of Long Beach next.
Brady Edmunds threw for two scores in the Oilers’ loss. HBHS trailed 21-14 at halftime, but the offense was silent in the second half.
ON THURSDAY, the Los Amigos High football teams’ perfect season had an imperfect second half at Monsoor Stadium in its game and suffered a 40-20 loss to El Rancho High of Pico Rivera.
For the first half, the Lobos and Dons were closely matched, each team answering the other with scores. At one point, the orange-and-black led 20-14 and the teams went into the locker rooms at halftime with El Rancho leading 21-20, the difference being an unsuccessful extra point try.
The second half was a different story. Los Amigos (11-1) suffered from an uncharacteristic run of three turnovers and El Rancho converted those into the victory that now propelled them to the semifinals.
For Los Amigos, Adrian Ramirez passed for 107 yards and ran for 78 more. Raul Cruz led the Lobo rushing effort with 67 yards and one TD.
In addition to an historic season, Los Amigos got into the record books as the first champion of the brand new Sigma League.
