Despite earlier pledges that he wouldn’t use his presidential pardon powers to spare his son Hunter from prison, President Joe Biden did just that on Sunday.
The Associated Press is reporting that Biden has issued the pardon for his son – convicted of drug and gun charges –because “I believe in the justice system, but as I have wrestled with this, I also believe raw politics has infected this process and it led to a miscarriage of justice.”
As recently as Nov. 8, the president reiterated his pledge to not pardon his only living son. “We’ve been asked that question multiple times.” said the president. “Our answer stands, which is no.”
Hunter Biden was facing a prison sentence of as many as 17 years in prison for the offenses he pleaded guilty to.
Attacks stop relief deliveries into Gaza
Worries about the safety of relief workers have led to the suspension of humanitarian aid to Gaza.
United Press International is reporting that the United Nations, which has been supplying food and medical supplies to refugees in the war-torn Gaza area in the south of Israel has suspended such deliveries.
According to UPI, two convoys have recently been attacked and looted by armed gangs near a crossing from Egypt to Israel. Five trucks were taken on Saturday, and earlier in November a convoy of 109 trucks were attacked by masked raiders who took 97 of those trucks and their contents.
Sports: Chargers, Rams are winners
Both area NFL teams posted wins on Sunday as the Los Angeles Chargers bested the Atlanta Falcons 17-13 and the Los Angeles Rams survived a scoreless first half to beat the New Orleans Saints 21-14, both on the road.
Justin Herbert passed for 147 yards for the Bolts. Cameron Dicker kicked three field goals and Tarheeb Still returned an interception for a score as Chargers improved to 8-4. They’re in second place in the AFC West.
The slow-starting Rams’ offense heated up in the second half with three touchdowns. Matthew Stafford threw for two scores and 183 yards, and Kyren Williams rushed for 183 yards and a touchdown. The Rams are now 6-6 and tied for second place in the NFC West with the Arizona Cardinals.
