The La Quinta Aztecs extended their winning streak to 10 on Wednesday night in their first round CIF-SS Division 5AA playoff matchup against the Webb School Gauls of Claremont, 68-45.

Despite a few threatening runs from the Gauls, the Aztecs were able to maintain control all night long and come away with a 23-point victory on their home floor.

The Webb Schools’ season will end with them finishing at 8-11 overall, and 4-5 in league.

After starting the season 5-9, La Quinta will move on to the second round with a record of 17-11 overall, and 8-0 in Orange League play.  The Aztecs are red-hot having won 12 of their last 14 games.

The Aztecs were led by senior forward Jefferson Vo who came off the bench and finished with 22 points and knocked down six three-pointers, and versatile junior big man Dean Do, who netted a double double with 25 points, 10 rebounds, and 3 assists.

The Gauls were led by sophomore forward Jimmie Brown III. who finished with a near double-double at 12 points and 9 rebounds.  Junior forward Josef Sharifi also had four points and grabbed 13 rebounds for the Webb Schools.

La Quinta Coach Mark Sanchez was happy with the win, but had mixed feeling about his team’s performance.

“We played really well in some areas, and in some areas we were not as good as we have been in the past.”

Sanchez was very impressed with the play of Jefferson Vo.

“This year we have been relying on other guys to get our victories, but tonight, senior Jefferson Vo was hitting everything from three and driving to the basket with success.”

La Quinta will travel to Diamond Ranch on Friday night for their second round matchup.
