Special election draws attention to vandalism of political signs

Rising temperatures over two ballot measures regarding the Huntington Beach public library system has led to some political signs being vandalized or torn down.

The Huntington Beach Police Department issued a statement this week stating that “the removal and vandalism of political /campaign signage is a crime.

“We will continue to investigate reports of political signs being defaced, removed or destroyed throughout the city,” police warned. Members of the public who see someone tampering with such signs are urged to call the HBPD at (714) 960-8811.

On June 2, voters in Surf City will participate in a special election. Measure A would eliminate a children’s book review board that critics call censorship, Measure B would require voter approval of any future privatization of the libraries.

Signs reading “Protect Our Kids From Porn” and urging voters to reject A and B have been especially controversial because of the use of the term “porn.”
