Is the United States government a good credit risk?
After the Moody’s Rating dropped Uncle Sam’s credit rating down from the “top-tier” Aaa rating, Wall Street reacted quietly.
According to the Associated Press, the S&P 500 on Monday was up a modest 0.1 percent. The Dow Jones Average was up by 0.3 percent and the tech-heavy Nasdaq was basically flat.
Moody’s was the last of the three major credit-ratings agencies to lower the government’s rating.
At issue is the rising federal debt and this isn’t the first time Uncle Sam’s credit rating was cut; S&P dropped it in 2011.
One potential impact is that some potential investors might feel the need to lend money to the U.S. government at a higher interest rate that is currently in place: 4.43 percent for 10 years.
Deportations of Venezuelans can continue
The Trump Administration may now lift protections from deportation for almost 350,000 Venezuelans who had been staying in the U.S. in the Temporary Protected Status.
On Monday, the U.S. Supreme Court issued an unsigned order, to be in effect until legal appeals on the deportations are completed, reports The New York Times.
Additionally, justices took issue on Friday with the Trump Administration for providing only one day’s notice to a different group of Venezuelans that they were going to be deported back to their native country.
Angels beat A’s; Blue Crew falls
For probably the first time all season, the Los Angeles Angels and Los Angeles Dodgers are moving in this kind of different directions.
The Angels defeated the Athletics 4-3 on Monday night for their fourth consecutive victory, while the Dodgers lost at home 9-5 to Arizona Diamondbacks for their fourth consecutive defeat.
Jose Soriano (3-4) pitched a strong game for the Halos, working six innings and yielding six hits and three earned runs. That was supported by two home runs – one by Nolan Schanuel (his third of the season) and one by Taylor Ward (his 13th) and the result was a win.
With that outcome the Angels are now 21-25 and just one percentage point out of fourth in the American League West behind the A’s.
As for the Blue Crew, the D-backs leaped ahead of them with six early runs and the home team couldn’t catch up. Mookie Betts hit two home runs and Shohei Ohtani one, but it wasn’t enough to win the game.
The Dodgers are now 29-19 and still lead the National League by a half-game over the San Diego Padres.
