Lots of fans are waiting for Shohei Ohtani’s debut as a pitcher this season, but he’s doing pretty well with the bat alone when batting leadoff for the Los Angeles Dodgers.
On Tuesday night in Cleveland he became the first player in Major League Baseball to reach 20 home runs this season as the Blue Crew defeated the Guardians 9-5.
Ohtani’s two-run homer in the fourth inning gave the Dodgers a 4-0 lead which would hold up despite two Cleveland rallies.
Max Muncy’s contributions were big, too. He hit a three-run homer (his fourth HR of the season) in the ninth to help provide some insurance.
With the win, the Dodgers are 34-21 and have a 2.5-game lead over the second place San Diego Padres in the National League West.
In Anaheim, the Los Angeles Angels fell behind 3-0 and ended up losing 3-2 to the New York Yankees. The slumping Orange County team managed eight hits, two by first baseman Nolan Schnauel.
But the team didn’t hit well when it counted, going zero-for-seven with runners in scoring position.
The Angels rallied with the two runs in rhe bottom of the ninth, but the ended up with their fourth loss in a row after winning eight straight – the Halos are 25-29 and are in fourth place in the American League West.
The Angels had a runner on with two out in the bottom of the ninth but Logan O’Hoppe popped up a 3-0 pitch to end the game.
The team wasted a good start by Ty Anderson (2-2), who pitched six innings while giving up five hits and one earned run. He struck out three Yankees and walked one.
