A pain-killing supplement which critics have called a dangerous addictive drug may be banned for sale in Huntington Beach if three members of the city council have their way.
Kratom is not a “controlled substance” and can be purchased through smoke shops and through online sources, but three council members – Mayor Pat Burns, Mayor Pro Tem Casey McKeon and Councilmember Gracey Larrea-Van Der Mark – have submitted a report to the council urging its prohibition in the city.
Their letter cites information from the U.S Drug Enforcement Administration and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration citing possible ill effects such as addiction, hallucinations, seizures, liver toxicity, and even death.
Its popularity comes from its reputation not only in treating pains, but also its stimulant effects of “increased alertness, boosted physical energy, talkativeness and a more social behavior,” according to drugs.com.
The council will meet in closed session at 4:30 p.m. and in regular session at 6:30 p.m. in its chamber at 2000 Main St (at Yorktown Avenue).

kratom saved my life! This plant has kept me off of all drugs for a decade now and allows me to safely manage my pain. Plant medicine needs to be protected.
Kratom is not what your writer says it is. Infact the FDA refused to comment about kratom in a court of law because they have no negative scientific data. See this link:

I am a nurse who had to retire on disability due to severe chronic pain. I have used kratom for many years without any medical side effects. Infact, it is the only thing that has helped my severe chronic pain.
I was addicted to FDA approved pain pills, benzos and muscle relaxers for 11 years straight, 2008-2019.
I got fired from chronic pain management in April 2019 because I didn’t show up for a per contract pill count. I was 11 pills short and my drug dealers didn’t have any pink oxy 10’s.
After that, I went to the streets and started doing cocaine while I was searching for a new pain management doctor.
In June 2019, whilst in cocaine withdrawal, I watched that documentary “A Leaf of Faith.” My journey with Kratom began the very next day.
Kratom shut that “I need one more snort, one more pill, one more escape” noise off in my brain. It allowed me to work on my whys of addiction. I have not been back to pain management in 6 years.
I am a functioning member of society again. I am a thriving mother again. I pay taxes again. I am no longer a burden to my kids. I am now a first time grandma.
I will be forever grateful and thankful that I accidentally found lab-tested whole-leaf powder Kratom.
I now pass on my journey, wisdom and science to help those struggling with addiction, chronic pain, anxiety and depression.
Yours truly, Kratom advocate/activist from Colorado est. 2019.
