Community garden to be studied

THE PROCESS of “multi-trophic” agriculture (Wikipedia).

A proposal to study the feasibility of creating a community garden with an emphasis on using “multi-trophic agriculture” was approved by the Huntington Beach City Council on Tuesday night.

The vote was 7-0 in favor of having a report submitted to the council with findings and results within six months.

Based on the outcome of the study, the council will consider the next steps for project development, including identifying a site, determining environmental impacts, a timeline and how to best engage the community.

Multi-trophic agriculture is an aquaculture system in which byproducts from one species are used as “inputs” for another. The waste produced by a “higher level” species serves as nutrients for a “lower level” species.

The item was submitted by Councilmember Andrew Gruel and Mayor Pat Burns.

The Aug. 5 meeting of the council has been cancelled due to a lack of a quorum. The next scheduled meeting is set for Tuesday, Aug. 19.
