Trump: ‘Flag-burning is illegal’

BURNING THE FLAG should be illegal, says President Donald Trump (shutterstock).

An executive order making burning of the American flag a federal offense was signed on Monday by President Donald Trump.

The order, which would require the Justice Department to investigate and prosecute people for that act, goes against a 1989 U.S. Supreme Court ruling declaring flag-burning to be a form of free expression protected by the U.S. Constitution.

“You burn a flag, you get one year in jail,” Trump said, according to the Associated Press, “You don’t get 10 years, you don’t get one month.”

He also is requiring Attorney General Pam Bondi to go to court to challenge the 1989 ruling. Trump indicted that his intention is that flag-burning would only be a crime if it “likely to incite imminent lawless action.”

According to The New York Times, no immediate explanation for the attack was made, but the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a statement reading, “Israel deeply regrets the tragic mishap that occurred today at the Nasser Hospital,” adding that “Israel values the work of journalists , medical staff and all civilians.”
