Don Alexander, who wrote a weekly sports column for the old Garden Grove Journal, once said that October was the best time for a sports fan.
At the same time, more or less, you get watch, cheer, or agonize over baseball, college football, pro football, college and/or pro basketball and even – if you care to – women’s college volleyball. Nothing wrong with that.
But being a sports columnist makes the month especially complicated. From April to August, it’s pretty much wiring about how weak the Dodgers are doing and how bad the Angels are faring.
Now, there’s so much going on, some important things are going to overlooked. Such as: uniforms. I like the idea of sliding gloves, but the ones that are popular today look like cookie mitts. You half expect to peer into the dugout snd find an air fry oven.
Throwback uniforms that recall a team’s traditions are fun, as long as they’re not too ugly or ridiculous – White Sox, Astros, we’re looking at you.
But the novelty (and appeal) has worn off. If the baseball big wheels want to really attract attention, they would make the managers wear street clothes like back in the days of Connie Mack, who managed the old Philadelphia Athletic for 50 years and holds the record for most wins, most losses and most ties.
In an era when a lot of managers don’t last 50 games, it’s a nice example to set for those trigger-happy general managers (and owners) who want perfection yesterday.
