It’s only on a Halloween night that the sixth game of a World Series could have such a spooky finish.
In the bottom of the ninth at Rogers Centre in Toronto, when it looked like the Blue Jays were going to perhaps finish a game-winning – and series-winning – rally, nine black cats in Dodger blue walked across their paths.
With one out and two on with the Los Angeles Dodgers leading 3-1, Addison Barger smashed a drive to deep center – a possible game winner.
But the ball became wedged in under the outfield fence – that’s a ground rule double – and two runs came off the scoreboard for the Jays.
After a pop fly out, Andres Gimenez hit a sinking line drive to center that Kike Hernandez was able to grab and fire a throw to Miguel Rojas at second, who applied the force out to Barger, who had drifted too far.
Double play and the game was over and the Dodgers were able to force a Game Seven Saturday in Toronto against what has to be a throughly stunned bunch of Blue Jays.
The Dodgers had only four hits – one of them a two-run single by Mookie Betts. Yoshi Yamamoto was the pitching hero, lasting six innings and yielding just one run.
“We’re gonna keep fighting, gonna keep going,” said managers Dave Roberts, whose team is again one win away from a seond consecutive World Series title.
Game Seven is scheduled for Saturday at 5 p.m. (Pacific time) from Rogers Centre.
