Six decades of growth and achievement were celebrated at the “State of the District” event held this week by the Garden Grove Unified School District at the Hyatt Regency Orange County hotel in Garden Grove.
Over 650 guests attended, including elected officials, community partners, district staff, families and students.
Performances by students included the Peters 4-6 Elementary School Chorus, the GGUSD Honor Orchestra and the La Quinta High School Marching Aztecs band.
The Santiago High School JROTC presented the colors and the National Anthem was sung by Christiana Fahmy, a student from Pacifica High School.
Christy Getachew, student representative to the GGUSD Board of Education lead the Pledge of Allegiance. Testimonial remarks were made by Los Amigos High School senior Lily Alcon and Rancho Alamitos student Anson Doan.
Presiding over the event was Gabriela Mafi, district superintendent. The GGUSD, founded in 1965 as the merger of the Garden Grove Union High School District, Alamitos School District and and Garden Grove Elementary School District, is the third-largest in Orange County and serves most of Garden Grove and parts of Anaheim, Cypress, Fountain Valley, Santa Ana, Stanton and Westminster.
