A groundbreaking ceremony for Garden Grove’s new Fire Station 6 is scheduled for Tuesday, at 5 p.m., at West Haven Park, 12232 West Street. The new facility replaces the station currently located at 12111 Chapman Ave. (at Debbie Street) The city has not built a new fire station in more than 45 years.

The announcement of the relocation of Fire Station No. 6 has been a two-year process as public input gathered at multiple community meetings were assessed and plans for the proposed project expanded.

The total estimated cost of the project is $5.5 million. Funding comes from the Certificate of Participation Bond granted in 2015. After breaking ground, the project is anticipated to take up to nine months to a year to complete.

Fire Chief Tom Schultz says, “Once completed, the new fire station will meet the needs of the community, including the Grove District – Anaheim Resort, for the next 50 years.”

Fire Station No. 6 will be a full-function, modern day, public service facility. The 7,860 square-foot facility includes an apparatus bay, front office, visitor lobby, laundry facility, kitchen and dining room, day room, and eight bunk rooms.

The design firm for the project took cues from existing architectural features found in the surrounding neighborhoods.

Built in 1971, the existing Fire Station No. 6 has had significant operational deficiencies and on-going maintenance problems due to its age. In 2015 and 2016, the City held a series of neighborhood meetings to select a new location to replace the existing fire station.
