A COLLISION between a sedan and a Metrolink train killed a man in Santa Ana Monday afternoon (SAPD photo).

A fatal crash between an automobile and a train in Santa Ana Monday afternoon snarled car and rail traffic for hours.

According to the Santa Ana Police Department and the Orange County Fire Authority, the collision took place near South Grand Avenue east of Hunter Avenue around 5:30 p.m.

A Metrolink train struck the car, trapping the driver in the wreckage. He was extracted from his sedan, but died at the scene. Police believe the vehicle accelerated across the mile-long train’s path and was hit by the locomotive, which dragged it over 600 feet.

The incident led to a SigAlert that shut down Grand in both directions between Chestnut Avenue and McFadden Avenue. The crash also caused delays to seven trains on two lines.

  1. Clearly, that photo is a BNSF freight train, the article says Metrolink was involved. Mile-long train would obviously be the freight train, you should correct the article.
