Shohei Ohtani’s 41st home run was the winning hit on Sunday as the Los Angeles Angels defeated the Houston Astros 2-1 and snapped a two-game losing streak.
The win, which salvaged one victory in an otherwise disappointing series, brings the Halos to within one game of .500 (59-60) and keeps them 6.5 games out of an American League wild card spot.
With the score tied 1-1 in the bottom of the sixth Ohtani knocked a pitch 448 feet over the centerfield wall in Minute Maid Park. It was his 41st home run of the season and his first since Aug. 3. He also had a stolen base, his 17th of the season.
Chase Sileth (4-1) got the win. He worked five innings, giving up four hits and no runs. He struck out five batters and walked two. Carlos Estevez got his 25th save of the year, pitching a perfect ninth inning in which he struck out two batters.
On Monday, the Halos will move to another Texas ball park and open a series with the Texas Rangers, who lead the American League West.
Eight win in a row for the Dodgers
With an 8-3 win over the Colorado Rockies at Chavez Ravine on Sunday, the Los Angeles Dodgers closed out a sweep of the series with the team from Denver and won their eighth game in a row.
The Blue Crew (71-46) continues to lead the National League West by 8.5 games over the second place San Francisco Giants.
Julio Urias (10-6) turned in a strong performance. He lasted seven innings, giving up four hits and three earned runs. Urias struck out 12 batters and walked none.
Miguel Rojas hit his second home run of the season and ended up with four RBIs. Mookie Betts was 2-for-5 with two RBIs on a single and a double.
The Dodgers will be idle on Monday and then start a home series with the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday with Bobby Miller (6-2) making the start.
