Controversial items on agenda

Four agenda items with potential for controversy are on the agenda for Tuesday night’s meeting of the Huntington Beach City Council.

They include:

  • consideration of “actionable policy options regarding city library materials and safeguards”;
  • consideration of three city charter amendments for voter approval in the March 5, 2024 statewide primary election;
  • a proposal by Mayor Tony Strickland and Councilmembers Pat Burns and Casey McKeon to censure Councilmember Natalie Moser for allegedly “inappropriate” comments made at the Aug. 1 council meeting;
  • creating a resolution declaring Huntington Beach to be a “No Mask and No Vaccine Mandate,” city as requested by Councilmember Gracey Van Der Mark.

The library item refers to concerns by the council majority about library materials that may have some sexual content being available to minors.

The  proposed charter amendments would require voter ID for elections, more in-person locations and monitoring of drop boxes, changing the qualifications for the office of city clerk, defining the flags that can be displayed on city property and requiring voter approval for any city transaction that “that forgives, waives or foregoes the collection of property (tax) of $100,000 or more.”

Also proposed in the ballot measures is changing the procedures for cancelling regular council meetings.

The council will meet at 6 p.m. in its council chambers at 2000 Main St. (at Yorktown Avenue).
