There’s a great big world out there.
And it doesn’t end at the borders or seashores.
Let’s turn our attention from the We-Don’t-Care-Series toward an intriguing idea floated by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, when he remarked that playing a Super Bowl in London “is a possibility.”
Well, based on the reaction from some quarters, you’d think he was advocating for warm beer and driving on the left side of he road. Football is American. Or as some people would put it, “Murrican!”
It is, but it evolved from rugby, which evolved from what we call “soccer,” both of which were birthed in Great Britain. He wasn’t talking about transplanting the NFL Championship game to Wembley Stadium on an annual basis, just a one-off, especially if a franchise is established or moved, quite likely, from Jacksonville to London.
The NFL is hot to establish a presence in Europe and a team in Tea Town would be a good start, and the Super Bowl the sugar in the tea. Three lumps at least.
Let’s face it: few things are more American than making money. There’s more cash in TV and marketing rights than turnstiles (expensive though they are!) and a “hands across the water” deal could be a huge step forward.
There are Canadian teams in MLB and the NBA. The NHL is bi-national. The NFL is the only big league without that big step.
American has always been the “international nation” with folks from every corner of the world.
If “Ted Lasso” can make American’s fall in love with their sport, maybe Patrick and Travis and Taylor could make them fall in love with ours.
