In the final league games of the 2023-24 high school basketball seasons for our West Orange County area, some hearts were made glad and some were broken as conference titles were won and lost.
Those games were all played on Thursday; the Pacifica girls team defeated Valencia 46-44 Friday in a playoff game for third place in the Empire League and a playoff berth.
Santiago and Los Amigos (both 8-2) finished in a tie for the Garden Grove League boys crown. Rancho Alamitos (6-4) took third.
On the girls GGL side, Loara (10-0) easily won the title, with Santiago and La Quinta (6-4) tied for second and third.
In the Wave League (girls), Marina (6-0) took the title, with Huntington Beach (3-2) in second. In the boys race Marina defeated Corona del Mar 51-43 to tie up the league title with 5-1 records.
Godinez (10-0) won the boys Golden West League trophy, followed by Westminster (7-3) and Segerstrom (6-4). Garden Grove (3-7) was fourth. The girls race was also won by Godinez (10-0), with Segerstrom (8-2) second and Katella (third).
Los Alamitos (6-0) took the boys Surf League honors, but the other three teams – Edison, Newport Harbor and Fountain Valley – all posted 2-4 records. On the girls side, Los Al (6-0) was first with Corona del Mar (3-3) in second.
In the Orange League, Savanna (10-0) won the boys honors, followed by Western (8-2) and Anaheim (6-4). The girls race saw Anaheim (10-0) prevailing with Savanna (8-2) and Magnolia (5-5) following.
Costa Mesa (10-2) won the Orange Coast League boys title followed by St. Margaret’s and Calvary Chapel/Santa Ana (9-3). Orange (1-11) tied for last.
Girls play saw Calvary Chapel (12-0) on top, with St. Margaret’s (10-2) in second and Estancia (8-4) in third. Orange (2-10) was seventh.
Orangewood (2-6) was fourth in the boys San Joaquin League campaign while the girls (6-0) won the SJL title.
