High court skeptical of abortion pill case; RFK’s running mate

It appears that the U.S. Supreme Court is unlikely to support the actions of  anti-abortion doctors and groups to oppose the federal government’s approval of a widely-used abortion pill.

Questions posed by a majority of the high court’s justices indicated they didn’t feel that they had “standing” – having suffered some harm – to oppose the Food and Drug Administration’s approval of mifepristone, which is said to be used in about two-thirds of all pregnancy terminations.

The case is before the court at the request of the Biden Administration after a federal appeals court backed restrictions on the drug.

Regardless of the court’s findings, use of mifepristone is illegal in many states; some have even tried to prosecute those who travel to a state where it’s legal to purchase.

Feds will prosecute election threats

VOTER FRAUD allegations have led to threats (Shutterstock).

The federal government will prosecute and seek prison terms against those who make threats against election workers.

The Election Threats Task Force was formed in 2021 after many threats – some of them death threats – were leveled against election officials by people who embraced the unsupported claim of widespread election fraud in the 2020 presidential election.

Task Force leader John Keller announced that so far 20 people have been charged and 13 have been convicted, leading to sentences of 18 month to 3.5 years.

RFK Jr. picks a running mate

Nicole Shanahan has been selected as a running mate for Robert F. Kennedy’s independent campaign for the presidency.

Like Kennedy, she has expressed skepticism about the COVID-19 pandemic and the value – or dangers – of vaccinations. She has also been a major supporter of Bobby Kennedy’s son, having donated millions of dollars to his long-shot campaign.

She’s been described as a wealthy Silicon Valley entrepreneur in high technology.

He had been running as a candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination, but won no primaries or delegates in his campaign against President Joe Biden.

Baltimore bridge in a deadly crash

The collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore had led to the presumed death of six construction workers, it’s feared.

The incident took place early Tuesday morning when a cargo ship lost power and crashed into the bridge, which quickly collapsed and fell into the water.

There was just enough time, authorities say, to stop cars from coming over the bridge, as the ship’s crew signaled “mayday” before the out-of-control ship struck a bridge support, triggering the span’s collapse.

The search for the six missing workers was suspended and will resume Wednesday morning.

Lakers win in OT, Ducks sink in Seattle

The purple and gold of the Los Angeles Lakers is starting to turn red-hot.

Without LeBron James, the team was nevertheless able to overcome a 16-point first quarter deficit to defeat the powerful Milwaukee Bucks 128-124 in double overtime on Tuesday night for their fourth consecutive win.

Austin Reaves scored 29 points and had a triple double, while Antony Davis scored 34 points and grabbed 23 rebounds as the Lake Show improved its record to 40-32, good for ninth place in the NBA Western Conference and fourth in the NBA Pacific.

The home Bucks (46-26) remain atop the NBA Central and are second in the Western Conference.

Up in the Pacific Northwest, the Anaheim Ducks (24-44-4) continued their season of futility, losing 4-0 to the Seattle Kraken.  It’s their second loss in a row and their eighth in 10 games; their record is the third-worst in the league.
