Four killed in Okla. tornadoes

TORNADO in Oklahoma in 1999 (Wikipedia).

Four people are dead and thousands without electric power in the wake of tornadoes in Oklahoma on Sunday.

At least 100 people were reported injured and the farming community of Sulphur was hard-hit. In that town of 5,000 people downtown buildings were leveled, cars and busses knocked over and roofs ripped off.

Thirty of the injuries statewide were reported to be in Sulphur. The federal government has offered assistance to cope with this wave of “twisters” in the state. The tornadoes were accompanied by heavy rain.

A man hurt Friday in the town of Minden is reported to have died. Two people were killed in the town of Holdenville and another along a highway.

Damage was also reported in the Omaha area of Nebraska.

Violence at UCLA over war in Gaza

Demonstrators breaching a barrier intending to separate protesters from counterprotestors on Sunday over the conflict in Gaza led to what educators call “physical altercations” at the Westwood campus.

The violence was minor, however, as security workers were able to break up some incidents of pushing and shoving. The protests centered around demands by some students for an immediate cease-fire between Israel and Hamas as well as divestment of the university system of companies that supply military arms to Israel.

Sports: Angels, Dodgers lose; Clips win

The Los Angeles Angels continued their losing streak on Sunday, losing 11-5 in Anaheim to the Minnesota Twins. It was their fourth consecutive loss and ninth in 10 games.

With a 10-18 record, the Halos are in fourth place in the American League West and one game out of last place in the division.

Two home runs in the fifth inning – by Luis Rengifo and Nolan Schanuel – were not enough to match a 17-hit Twins onslaught.

The Los Angeles Dodgers (18-12) saw their six-game winning streak snapped on Sunday as they lost 3-1 to the Blue Jays in Toronto. The sole score by the Blue Crew was a solo home run by Freddie Freeman in the sixth.

Michael Grove (0-1) took the loss, lasting just two winnings and giving up four hits and three earned runs. He struck out three batters and walked one.

The Los Angeles Clippers evened their NBA Western Conference playoff series with the Dallas Mavericks at two games each on Sunday with a 116-111 victory.

Paul George and James Harden each scored 33 points as the Clips held off a late Dallas rally to take the win.

Game Five will be on Wednesday back in Los Angeles.
