East Coast vs. West Coast. LA vs NYC. Hollywood vs. Broadway. Division leaders.

The long bi-coastal rivalry between the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees popped up again in the Big Apple on Friday and fans got their money’s worth. Provided they were paid by the hour.

Excellent pitching performances by both teams kept two usually powerful offenses in check, but the Blue Crew finally broke through in the 11th inning and won, 2-1.

“Man, what a game,” said Dodgers manager Dave Roberts. “Wow. Dodgers, Yankees.”

The Dodgers prevailed on Teo Hernandez’ two-run double in the final inning, but they wouldn’t have got there if it wasn’t for Yoshinobu Yamamoto’s excellent pitching performance.

He pitched seven innings, giving up just two hits and no runs. He struck out seven batters and walked two.

“Yoshinobu … his best outing as a Dodger,” said Roberts. “You could just see it. He felt it. He knew we needed it.”

The Yankee pitching staff was nearly as good. Cody Poteet went 4.2 innings as the starter, yielding two hits. He struck out one batter but walked three. The relief corps would only give up two hits the rest of the way, including Hernandez’ game-winner.

While Teo’s hit was enough for the win, it nearly wasn’t enough. The Yankees scored once in the bottom of the 11th on Aaron Judge’s single, bringing in Anthony Volpe. But with the tying run on first, Giancarlo Stanton was called out on strikes.

The series continues on Saturday with Gavin Stone (6-2) making the start for the Dodgers and Nestor Cortes (3-4) for the Yanks.
