The U.S. Supreme Court has upheld a federal gun control law that placed a ban on firearms possession by people under restraining orders against people ordered to stay away from spouses or conjugal partners.

The court voted 8-1 to uphold the rule, intended to protect victims of domestic violence.

Associate Justice Clarence Thomas cast the lone dissenting vote.

The high court overturned a ruling from a Louisiana federal appeals court that said that the rule violated the Second Amendment’s reference to citizen’s “right to bear arms.”

This ruling came a week after the high court voted 6-3 against a ban on “bump stocks” which can give a semiautomatic rifle a higher rate of fire.

Bannon wants delay in sentencing

STEVE BANNON.

Former Donald Trump adviser Steve Bannon has made an emergency motion to the U.S. Supreme Court to ask a federal judge to delay his sentencing.

Bannon was convicted two years ago of contempt of Congress for refusing to comply with a subpoena from a House committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol.

Bannon is seeking to be sentenced to serve his time at a minimum security prison camp instead of a low-security federal prison. He is scheduled to begin serving his sentence on July 1.

Iowa says educators must report “pronouns”

Teachers and other educators in Iowa are required under law to report to parents if their child makes a request to use “different” pronouns that indicate a change in gender identification.

The Iowa Board of Education made that ruling as an interpretation of a new state law intended to inform parents about not just a change in pronouns but also a name “meant to affirm the child’s gender identity.”

Such laws are becoming more common, especially in the South and are being challenged in the courts.

Weather:  Not as hot as forecast

Those of us in our West Orange County area who like it hot will be very disappointed; the prediction of local thermometers hitting 90 won’t be fulfilled.

Saturday’s daytime high will be 84 with an overnight low of 66 under party cloudy skies. Sunday will rise to 88 (67) with mostly sunny conditions. Monday begins the cooling trend at 85 (68) and then Tuesday at 80 (67), both on sunny days.
