Shohei Ohtani didn’t win the National League Triple Crown batting title on Sunday, but everything else went right for the Los Angeles Dodgers, defeating the Colorado Rockies 2-1 in Denver to finish the season at 98-64 and head into the MLB playoff as NL West champions.
The Blue Crew will have some time off, and will face the NL wild card winner on Saturday, Oct. 5 at home.
Against the Rockies, the Dodgers trailed 1-0 going into the eighth inning when Chris Taylor hit a solo home run to tie the score, and a combination of a single, two stolen bases and a balk brought in the winning run.
Ohtani was 1-of-4 on Sunday to finish at .310, but had 54 homers and 130 RBIs on the year, the best offensive performance in Dodger history. He led the NL in home runs and RBIs, but was passed by Luis Arraez of San Diego in batting average at .314.
Angels final game was typical
In a game which was symbolic of a team finishing with its worst-ever season, the Los Angeles Angels lost 8-0 in Anaheim to the Texas Rangers.
They managed only four hits and committed a fielding error as they ended the year 63-99, worth fifth and last place in the American League West. It was the Halo’s sixth consecutive defeat and ninth in 10 games.
Bad day for Rams, Chargers
Sunday was not a fun day for fans of the LA-area NFL teams, as both the Rams and Chargers suffered losses.
The Rams (1-3) lost 24-18 to the Chicago Bears (2-2), who were led by former USC star QB Caleb Williams. He passed for 157 yards and one score while running back D’Andre Swift rushed for 93 yards and one touchdown for Chicago.
Matthew Stafford passed for 224 yards for the Rams. He threw one interception and lost one fumble. Kyren Williams rushed for 94 yards and one touchdown.
Joshua Karty was the top scorer for the visitors in the Windy City, connecting on four of five field goals, including one from 52 yards.
Back at SoFi Stadium, the Chargers (2-2) were held scoreless after halftime as they lost 17-10 to the Kansas City Chiefs.
Justin Herbert threw for 179 yards and one score for the Bolts, while Patrick Mahomes passed for 245 yards and one touchdown for the Bears.
With the score tied 10-10, Kansas City scored on a two-yard run by Samaje Perine with 6:04 for the game-winner.
