“Final approval” of a $1000 limit on political contributions didn’t turn out to be final after all.
On Nov. 26, the Stanton City Council first approved the limit for city elections and then reversed itself on Dec. 10 and voted it down 3-2.
The campaign limit would have been among the strictest in Orange County. The meeting was conducted in midst of a transition of the council membership.
The second reading and adoption was passed on a 4-1 vote with outgoing Councilmember Carol Warren voting “no.” But then Mayor David Shawver – right after the two new members had been sworn in –suggested the proposed ordinance violated state law and should be reconsidered and revoked.
That led to the council – Shawver and new members Victor Barrios and John Warren (son of Carol Warren) in favor – voting to revoke the campaign limit, with Councilmembers Gary Taylor and Donald Torres opposed.
